A rare but serious reminder: Rodents can turn a dream environment into a nightmare.

In early May 2026, news emerged of a suspected hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius, a Dutch expedition cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean. Three passengers have sadly died, and several others became seriously ill. Health authorities, including the World Health Organization (WHO), have confirmed hantavirus in at least two cases, with strong links to rodent exposure-likely from contact with urine, droppings, or saliva of infected rodents.

While such outbreaks are rare, they highlight a very real risk: rodents are not just a nuisance-they can be dangerous to human health.

What Is Hantavirus and How Does It Spread?

Hantaviruses are a group of viruses carried by rodents such as rats and mice. Humans can become infected through:

  • Breathing in airborne particles contaminated with rodent urine, droppings, or nesting materials
  • Direct contact with contaminated surfaces
  • In rare cases, bites or specific transmission routes depending on the strain

Early symptoms often resemble the flu—fever, muscle aches, fatigue-but can quickly escalate into severe respiratory illness (Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome), which can be life-threatening.

This incident serves as a reminder of how quickly rodent activity can escalate into a serious health risk, particularly in enclosed or shared environments.

Why This Matters for Your Home or Business

You don’t need to be on a ship for rodents to become a problem. Mice and rats are common invaders in homes, restaurants, warehouses, and offices-especially as they seek food, warmth, and shelter.

Rodent risks include:

  • Disease transmission (including salmonella, leptospirosis, and more)
  • Property damage from gnawing wires, insulation, and structures (fire risk)
  • Rapid infestation growth from just a small number of rodents

Early warning signs include:
Droppings, gnaw marks, nesting materials, scratching noises, or unusual odours.
